The emperor's new clothes in assembly technology? Are we making too much fuss about tightening technology – it is not Voodoo or magic, right?
It feels like every month a new fastening technology standard comes out, or a tool manufacturer threatens that you must use their product or service!
A lot of text, even more work, and a feeling of uncertainty remains. Screws used to hold things together, too, didn't they – without all the Voodoo?
It's time to concentrate on the essentials again - namely what you really want to achieve with bolted joints and how you can achieve and check this in a meaningful way - without any mumbo jumbo.
This presentation will give you an insight into and a better understanding of the tasks of bolted joints, the necessary assembly specifications and sensible quality inspection measures.

Thanks to ESTIC’s patented motor control system, our pulse fastening technology has achieved an unprecedented reduction in reaction forces. Torque data is continuously processed every 1/2000 of a second to control the overall fastening strength and ensure safe and highly accurate tightening with minimal reaction force. What’s more, the tool’s ergonomic design and advance pulse fastening technology allow for single-handed operation in certain situations, dramatically reducing the strain placed on the operator.

POWERLOK® – The solution against self-loosening screws
Self-loosening screws represent one of the most persistent and costly challenges in industrial assembly and manufacturing. Through vibration, thermal expansion and contraction, material creep, and repeated mechanical stress, conventional fasteners gradually lose their clamping force, leading to joint failure, equipment malfunction, and costly downtime.
This presentation explores the fundamental physics behind fastener self-loosening and reveals how traditional solutions are falling short against the increasingly complex demands of modern manufacturing - including ease of automation, assembly reliability, technical cleanliness, and challenging assembly materials.
We present an innovative approach that combines POWERLOK® thread technology with complementary fastening elements to create a robust solution that simultaneously attacks both vibration-induced loosening and material relaxation, illustrated through real-world examples where failure is not an option.

The crazy world of testing tools – what is real, what is fake, what is really helpful and necessary
Markus Fischer has many years of experience with screw‑technology audits. He shares some almost unbelievable stories, illustrating just how much untapped potential still lies in this seemingly simple and well‑functioning “screw.”
His message is clear: you should never take anything for granted — not even within your own company.

The torque is set – but is the result really correct?
In many production environments, the torque wrench is considered a guarantee for safe bolted joints. Yet even when tools are set correctly, deviations from the target value still occur. The reason: typical sources of error in the tightening process – such as extension length deviations or continued load following click – often go unnoticed in day-to-day operations. The consequences can range from quality issues to safety-critical risks.
This presentation uses practical examples to show where these errors arise, why they often remain undetected in production, and which technological approaches can help make tightening processes more transparent, reproducible and reliable.
A presentation for anyone who believes that tightening with a torque wrench automatically results in a correct bolted joint.

Ensuring reliable electrical contact fastener design
Especially in the high-voltage sector, it becomes clear that optimizing individual products or components alone is not sufficient. What is required is a systematic approach. With the iFast Competence Center, ARNOLD UMFORMTECHNIK has created a framework in which all relevant dimensions of electrical contact fasteners are brought together.
At the core are three pillars:
Conductivity: consistently low contact resistance achieved through optimized contact geometries, contact pressure, and surface finishes.
Cleanliness: particle-free connections in accordance with VDA 19.1, validated assembly processes, and testing methods capable of detecting even the smallest disturbances.
Sealing: protection against moisture and media through sealing concepts verified according to IP standards and helium leak testing.
Beneath these pillars lies consolidated engineering expertise – ranging from simulation-based design according to VDI 2230, FEM analyses, and ultrasonic preload force measurements to electrical resistance testing in the micro-ohm range.
This is complemented by system technology for assembly and process monitoring, ensuring reliable implementation in series production.
The focus of the presentation could be on Electrical Contact Fasteners (ECF); please also see the attached abstract. However, this is still under discussion, and both the presentation and the detailed content will need to be further developed.

Needs-based qualification in bolting technology – seven steps for proper and standards-compliant knowledge development
The causes of quality issues in industrial bolting assembly, disruptions in the production process, or component damage are diverse and complex. Every employee can contribute—through theoretical expertise or practical skills—to identifying errors at an early stage or avoiding them altogether.
An experienced trainer and instructor will explain in an engaging and practical manner the potential sources of error in the design process, in the selection of bolting tools, and in defining assembly procedures and monitoring parameters. In addition, numerous real-life examples will highlight critical sources of error in the day-to-day handling of fasteners, components, and bolting equipment.
But how can this urgently needed, proper, and standards-compliant knowledge development be achieved within a company? This interactive presentation introduces an exciting and holistic concept: from qualification analysis to the implementation of traditional training methods and the integration of modern digital learning modules, all the way to individual competency certification.
Needs-based qualification in both theory and practice, efficiency of training measures, effectiveness in knowledge transfer in line with the current state of the art, and compliance with VDI/VDE-MT 2637—these goals can all be achieved simultaneously and do not have to be mutually exclusive.
